The Torrington Library was founded
in 1864 by a group of men who wanted to do something worthwhile for
their community. The most active trustee at the time was Mr.
Lauren Wetmore, who not only worked hard for the Library, but also
remembered it in his will Over the years other public-spirited
citizens have followed Mr. Wetmore's example and because of this, the
Library has developed into a learning center for the people of
Torrington. Trustees of the Library have endeavored to carry
forward the ideals that benefactors such as Lauren Wetmore, Elisha
Turner, Adelaide Coe Godfrey and Ella Seymour Coe fostered with their The building that houses the Torrington Library was constructed in 1900 with funds donated by Elisha Turner. The addition that currently houses the Children's Room was constructed in 1926 with funds donated by Adelaide Coe Godfrey and Ella Seymour Coe.

At the 4th light is a major intersection with 4 lanes--choose the lane second from the left. As you move forward, stay to the right so you are in the far right lane crossing center bridge. Bear right at the light on the bridge, and take the first right on to Daycoeton Place between the library and Webster Bank. Route 8 South to Exit 44 (Downtown Torrington) Go straight at the light at the bottom of the exit ramp. (Columbus Rd.) Go to the light at the end of Columbus Road and take a right on to East Main St. At the 3rd light is a major intersection with 4 lanes--choose the lane second from the left. As you move forward, stay to the right so you are in the far right lane crossing center bridge. Bear right at the light on the bridge, and take the first right on to Daycoeton Place between the library and Webster Bank.
Patron parking is in the Municipal Parking Lot to the rear of the building or free parking on Daycoeton Place.
Loan periods: Regular collection (fiction and non-fiction
materials): 4 weeks
Materials may be renewed once, either by phone or in person. Materials excluded from renewal are videos/DVD's, 7 day loan books, or materials that are on reserve for another patron.
10 cents per day for all Regular Collection,
Periodicals, and Seven Day Loan materials. (to maximum of $3.00)
Any Torrington Resident with proof of a current address ( Driver's License, Checkbook, etc.) may obtain a Torrington Library card. Non-Residents must have an up-to-date library card from their home town. There is fee of $2.00 to replace lost cards.
The Library will be closed on the following days in 2007: January 1st -- New Year's Holiday Back to top of page
