Did you ever wonder about how people on the home front visualized what was happening on the battle fields of the Civil War? Nancy Finlay, Curator of Graphics at CHS, will share contemporary prints and photographs of the conflict produced right here in Connecticut. These include stirring battle scenes and moving portraits of individual soldiers drawn from the extensive collections of CHS. This group, known as the Culper Spy Ring, would ultimately change the course of the American Revolution. The Culper’s carried intelligence and secret letters from Setauket, Long Island to Fairfield, Connecticut and the eventually to George Washington. For close to five years, the ring worked under the cover of darkness and danger so that America could be a free nation. Now it’s your turn! Based off Alexander Rose’s book, Washington’s Spies, and the new AMC smash hit, Turn, you can become a Revolutionary War Spy. During this one-of-a-kind event, you and your secret spy ring will try to successfully inform General Washington of the Crown’s plan to ambush newly arrived French aide in Rhode Island. By using ciphers, coded letters, invisible ink and more, you must reach Washington in time! During the event you will have an opportunity to view the Library's collection of Revolutionary War items, learn about the Revolutionary War through interesting and interactive displays, and experience old New England style refreshments and atmosphere. This program tells the story of Cole Porter, beginning with his boyhood in Peru, Indiana, up through Yale and on to his success on Broadway and in Hollywood. The program will also feature some of the famous folk he encountered along the way, all the while making his music tell the story of his life. Though it was a financial failure the 1964/65 New York World's Fair is considered a cultural success and is fondly remembered by those who attended. Though pictures and lectures you will learn the history of the fair, its creation and construction. You will also learn about the little known controversies during its run. The audience will also get a quick tour of the highlights of the fair, its best pavilions and its flops. This lecture is presented by Jason Scappaticci. Jason has his BA from Syracuse University and his MA from Trinity College in Hartford. Jason works full time at Manchester Community College and is a life long resident of Manchester. He is passionate about history and enjoys sharing it with others. He has given his lectures for many groups and organizations in the Greater Hartford area and has also been invited to speak at the Mark Twain House and the Old State House. These two iconic Torrington landmarks, are joining forces for one historic night! The event will benefit both the Library and the Trust. Seating is limited and there is a $10.00 admission fee to attend. Garrison Leykam, author of Classic Diners of Connecticut will wow audiences with his knowledge and history of some of the most beloved eateries. Over twenty thousand miles of highways and main streets crisscross the state of Connecticut, inviting hungry travelers and locals into the more than one hundred diners that dot the roadways. Among these eateries are some of the most prized American classic diners manufactured by such legendary builders as DeRaffele, O'Mahony, Tierney and Kullman. Author Garrison Leykam hosts a road trip to Connecticut's diners, celebrating local recipes and diner lingo--order up a #81, frog sticks or a Noah's boy with Murphy carrying a wreath--as well as stories that make each diner unique. Tony's Diner in Seymour still keeps pictures of the 1955 flood to always remember the tragedy the diner overcame. Stories like these--of tragedy, triumph, sanctuary, comfort and community--fill the event with this celebration of classic and historic diners of the Nutmeg State. About Garrison Leykam Garrison Leykam is recognized as a groundbreaker in reality TV as Host and Producer of "DINERS" that aired on Connecticut Public Television (CPTV). The show follows Garrison and bikers chosen from open auditions who shared his passions for motorcycles and diners as they rode to classic neon and chrome eateries. His theme motorcycle from "DINERS" was featured in the MotoStars: Celebrities + Motorcycles exhibit alongside bikes from Brad Pitt, Carlos Mencia, Keith Urban, Peter Fonda and other celebrities and bands including Journey, Rush and Foreigner as well as in the companion book to the exhibit. Garrison's motorcycle trip across Egypt was a two=part feature story in New York Rider magazine. He was a producer, engineer and A&R scout for London Records, Inc. for ten years during the height of the BritishWave. He produced legendary jazz pianist Erroll Garner, hit singer-songwriter LesliePearl and Texas band Greezy Wheels and as head of recording studio operations he worked in various capacities with The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Al Green, Van Morrison, Dave Edmunds and others. A performer himself, he has appeared at legendary CBGBs in New York City and the world-renowned Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. |
