Spy Ring Virtual Game

Vintage map

Created by the Torrington Library!

In the midst of the American Revolution, a small group of patriots secretly formed a spy ring under the direct orders of General George Washington.  This group, known as the Culper Spy Ring, would ultimately change the course of the American Revolution.  The Culpers carried intelligence and secret letters from Setauket, Long Island to Fairfield, Connecticut and the eventually to George Washington.  For close to five years, the ring worked under the cover of darkness and danger so that America could be a free nation.

Now it’s your turn! Based off Alexander Rose’s book Washington’s Spies and the AMC smash hit Turn, you can become a Revolutionary War Spy.  During this one-of-a-kind event, you and your secret spy ring will try to successfully inform General Washington of the Crown’s plan to ambush newly arrived French aide in Rhode Island. By using ciphers, coded letters, invisible ink and more, you must reach Washington in time!

Here's how to play:
  • Watch the introduction video below by Miss Jill.
  • Print the documents below. You will need these to solve certain clues.
  • Begin your journey by clicking on the "click here to begin” scroll below.
  • After you solve the first clue, return to this page and click on the picture that matches the answer to the clue you just solved. This will open the next clue.
  • Do this for each clue. You can always print the clues for your convenience or keep a piece of scrap paper handy.
  • Once you have completed all of the clues, you will be guided to complete a spy ring completion form.
  • Once completed, you will be entered into a drawing to win a cool prize!

Please be advised that this is intended for TPS grade five students. Each year, Miss Jill visits fifth grade classrooms to present this event. If you are younger, please don't play so you can experience it for the first time when you enter fifth grade!
