This group, known as the Culper Spy Ring, would ultimately change the course of the American Revolution. The Culper’s carried intelligence and secret letters from Setauket, Long Island to Fairfield, Connecticut and the eventually to George Washington. For close to five years, the ring worked under the cover of darkness and danger so that America could be a free nation. Now it’s your turn! Based off Alexander Rose’s book, Washington’s Spies and the new AMC smash hit, Turn, you can become a Revolutionary War Spy. During this one-of-a-kind event, you and your secret spy ring will try to successfully inform General Washington of the Crown’s plan to ambush newly arrived French aide in Rhode Island. By using ciphers, coded letters, invisible ink and more, you must reach Washington in time! You will also have the opportunity to view our NEW historical documents hung throughout the library and see the originals! They include letters written and signed by George Washington, General Burgoyne, James Madison, and Daniel Webster. Recommended for Middle School age students through Adult. Softer Side of Celtic with Jeff Snow Thursday, March 21st at 6:30 Registration begins March 1st Celtic Culture is woven deeply throughout the fabric of America and especially so in the Northeast. The Softer Side of Celtic combines the music, stories and a wee bit of history from Scotland, Ireland and England into a program that will keep your audience on the edge of their seat. There will be singing, laughing, clapping and perhaps a bit of foot stomping. You might see a few tears as your audience hears the story of John Hunt who came to America in 1855. He never returned to Ireland and never saw his family again. Their only communication was the annual family letter that told John the family news. The letters were discovered in the 1970's and became the foundation for the Ballad of Kilkelly Ireland. First Ladies: An Adventure in Glamour, Guts, and Gumption Thursday, March 14th at 6:30 Registration begins March 1st Join Mariann Millard as she talks about the personalities and adventures of the women who became the First Ladies of the United States. Who were they really? What made them tick? Did they love or loathe their role? Did they sink or swim navigating the complexities of politics, protocol and publicity, whether they did so willingly or not? This is a lively, humorous, and engaging hour that weaves historical and modern events and facts about First Ladies to understand and appreciate the important role they play, starting with Martha Washington. Personal anecdotes by Mariann, a Licensed DC Guide, will be judiciously used to enhance the First Lady experience. |
