Consuming News in a Digital Age with Kevin Noblet

9/30/2019

Picture
Thursday, November 7th from 6:00-7:30
Registration begins October 15th

Description: Complaints of fake and biased information are heard everywhere these days. Popular services on the internet often promote partisan attitudes and arguments. So how can a responsible person make sure the news they read, watch and listen to is accurate and fair? News literacy programs offer an answer, encouraging a mindful and disciplined approach to consuming news and being an informed citizen in a democracy.

Kevin Noblet, of Barkhamsted, was a journalist for four decades, starting on Connecticut newspapers and then working as a reporter and editor for The Associated Press in New Orleans, New York and overseas. He finished his career at Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal. A former Norman Fellow at Harvard University, he taught journalism at Columbia and Ohio universities. He now teaches a news literacy course at Northwest Connecticut Community College in the spring semester.

Known all across the planet as a fearless fighter for social issues, Elton John is a true legend. His songs, which are all steeped in his generous spirit, have touched multiple generations of people. But life hasn't always been easy for Elton. Born in a time when expressing one's sexuality is verboten, John fights the pretense that he can't live his life out in the open. With an astonishing musical gift encouraged by his mother, though, he is fated to step into the spotlight-and stay there. His skyrocketing body of work provides inspiration and hope to all who listen. R/2 hours

You Are Not Alone

Registration begins September 15th

Acclaimed Connecticut Paranormal Author, Sydney Sherman, is continuing her successful book tour and speaking forums throughout Connecticut and New England sharing her life experiences and book, You Are Not Alone: Our Loved Ones Are Here…You’re Just Not Listening. Ms. Sherman encourages all of us to consider the possibilities of connecting to the other side. Reservations are required for the free event. You may sign up on the Library website. Sherman’s book outlines her passage from confusion to acceptance of her relationships with the many spirits who inhabit her everyday world. The book goes beyond a simple biographical story of a medium. Frustrated with media sensationalism and misinformation about the afterlife and contact with spiritual entities, Sydney decided to “come out” with her secret. You Are Not Alone is part of her goal to provide clarity and understanding of the paranormal. You Are Not Alone approaches the paranormal with a healthy dose of common sense and encourages rational skepticism. The author looks at why and what we believe about the paranormal and the afterlife. Her book draws distinctions between myths and the paranormal and recounts numerous experiences with spirits. She offers hints to avoid falling prey to the frauds in the paranormal field. The author educates readers on how they too can continue their relationship with their loved ones. With step by step advice, Sherman encourages people to think about the potential the paranormal holds for all of us. Sydney hopes readers will come to the same understanding ---they are not gone; they are still very much here with us....we just need to start listening.
